Stay Safe This Holiday Season

This is the time of year crooks and thieves look forward to.
With all the hustle and bustle of running around trying to get
things done we can become distracted and fail to notice our
surroundings. Don't be a victim due to carelessness.

Here are a few tips to help you stay safe.

Try to do your shopping during the daylight hours.

Try to park close to store or mall entrances, and in well lit areas.

Keep your packages in the trunk of your car or hidden from view.

When walking through parking lots, stay alert, look around for any
thing suspicious.
Walk with authority. Keep defense sprays at the ready.

Don't dangle handbags from your shoulder. Carry it tucked firmly
under your shoulder. Even better, try not to carry a hand bag at all.
Instead, put your driver's license and credit cards in a front pocket
so your hands will be free.

Be careful when using ATM's. Use those in populated places, but be
alert for suspicious persons hanging around. Avoid using ATM's at night.
If you must go at night, use a well lit ATM that is visible to passing
traffic.

Before leaving a store put your cash and credit cards out of sight.
Don't walk out counting your change or putting away your check book
or credit cards.

Lastly, don't forget safety and security in the home. While you are out
shopping burglars may decide to do their shopping in your home.

Hopefully, you will find this information helpful in keeping you and
yours safe this holiday season and throughout the year.

Date Change For Next Meeting

HELLO CLASSMATES,

IT SEEMS AS IF THE NOV. 3RD DATE IS A "NORFOLK STATE
AWAY GAME".

I HAVE GOTTEN SEVERAL E-MAILS ASKING IF THE DATE CAN
BE CHANGED.

I THINK NOV. 17TH IS A GOOD DATE BECAUSE NORFOLK STATE
WILL BE PLAYING WINSTON-SALEM HERE IN NORFOLK, AT 1:00PM.

HOPEFULLY, THIS DATE WILL ALLOW OUR OUT-OF-TOWN
CLASSMATES TO ATTEND.

BECAUSE THE GAME TIME IS EARLY, WE CAN MEET AROUND
5:00 OR 6:00, SERVE A LITTLE DINNER, MAKE A FEW DECISIONS,

AND STILL HAVE TIME FOR YOUR CHOICE OF SOCIALIZING.

SOUNDS WIN-WIN TO ME!!!!

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!!!!!!!

Muhammad Ali's Visit To BTW

Here's a photo of a blow-up of a famous photo of Muhammad Ali
playing around with four other guys. I think they made a couple
of records or something. This was around 1963-4.

I remember one Spring (1968?) when Ali came to Norfolk and
spoke at Norfolk State College. (now University) Someone
suggested he go to the nearby high school (BTW) and speak
there. That someone probably wasn't fully aware of our
reputation.

Mr. Ali came and spoke to us over the P/A system.
He recited his amusing poems including his notorius
"Hell no, I ain' gon' go." etc., which roused us to a
fever pitch.

During his speech, the 5 minute buzzer went off letting us
know we had that much time left before class ended. On this
occassion that was the equivalent of "On your mark, get set....

I was in Mr. Thad Rhodes' last bell English class in
room 116 that day. When the bell sounded ...GO!" students
on all three floors poured out of their classes and headed
for Mr. Holmes' office area. That's where the P/A system was
located and, "The Greatest" himself.

We would not let the man leave. Neither Mr. Preston,
Mr. Holmes, nor Mrs. Alston could budge us. As some of you
may recall these were powerful administrators and they
commanded respect.

Finally, a compromise was suggested by Mr. Ali's staff.
All the students should meet on the athletic field and
Mr. Ali would come there and shake our hands. Grudgingly,
we made a path and Mr. Holmes led "The Champ" out of the
building.

We gathered on the football field and two cars were parked
close together so we could pass through them in an orderly
fashion and shake Muhammad Ali's hand.

While waiting my turn I got the idea to go through the line
twice. Once for the proper right hand shake, and again for
a left hand shake. That way I would have the special memory
of shaking both his hands.

Well, I did that, and on the way home (I walked) I thought
maybe this is something I will tell my children about.

The memory was special after all because a couple of months
ago my son and I were watching a biography of Muhammad Ali
on T.V. and I told him this story.

This,too,shall pass

The other day I was feeling kinda blue because
I felt I hadn't achieved all I wanted to at this
time in my life. This, after reading about others
who appeared to have done much more with their lives.

While moping through the local Home Depot, I ran into
a guy I knew from the past and we began to talk about
old times. During this conversation another man whom
we both knew showed up. (what are the odds?)

The first man began talking about his son whose
repetitive negative behavior had landed him in the
state hotel (prison), and all the court dates involved
and the humiliation and disapointment he felt. He also
spoke about having recently lost his mother who I knew
from childhood.

The other man told us about his wife being very ill and
that he, too, was not in the best of shape. Surgery was
imminent for both. Plus they are raising their grand
children.

Both men spoke of other problems they had. I guess they
had to talk to someone. I listened.

While listening to these men, I reflected on my life and
thought how blessed I am not to have any major negative
events going on in my life. Yes, I've had my troubles,
but nothing like what they were going through.

Then I realized that my achievement issues were not all
that important, just do some re-inventing, and adapt a
more positive outlook.

When we do experience major difficulties, they seem to be
all encompassing, and take what seems like forever to be
resolved. One way or another, in time, they will be.
Remember the verse "This ,too, shall pass".

So, if at times, you find yourself feeling troubled,
remember there are those whose lives are much more
difficult than yours.

In my case I left the Home Depot remembering the song from
the early '70s by William DeVaughn,
" Just Be Thankful For What You've Got".

And I am.

Don't Pump Gas On May 15th

Dear Class,

...in April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.

Let's do our part to stop fattening the pockets of President Cheney
and his front man George W Bush.

On May 15th 2007, all internet users are asked to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places.

There are 73,000,000+ Americans currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up.

If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take
$2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies' pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day.

Let's all participate in this national effort.

Please send this message to all on your contact list. With the title ''Don't pump gas on May 15th".

Send Large Files Quickly And For Free

Greetings All,

Here are some useful links and a brief description of each one

If this problem hasn't hit you yet... it will.

With the ever-increasing popularity of sharing home-videos, mp3 audios, and other large files online, actually transferring those files to your customers, friends, and family presents a problem.

Most email systems limit the size of the files you can send, and often completely restrict some file types, such as .exe, from passing through their email servers.

Most computer geeks say, "Just ftp it to your server and I'll download it from the Web."

Unfortunately, that solution often proves too much of a hassle, and actually rates impossible for those without ftp access to a website and the knowledge to use it.

To solve this problem, a new breed of website file transfer service has emerged to help the technically or time- challenged masses share their huge files online.

First is YouSendIt.com

I discovered this website as most people discover new sites, I saw someone else using it.

Log on to www.yousendit.com.

After you create a user name and password:

(1)Enter the recipient's email address, (2) chose the file to be sent by browsing your hard drive, (3) enter your email and type in a brief message, and (4) click the "send" button.

The service uploads the file to the web and sends the recipient an email message with a link to download the file from their website.

After downloading the file, you can click a link to delete the file from their server.

If you don't click that link, the server would automatically delete the file after 7 days.

This service allows you to send up to a 1 gigabyte file.

This enables you to send virtually anything you can think of to anyone with an email address and Internet connection.

In order to send files larger than 1 gigabyte you will have to use one of their pay plans.

Next is DropLoad.com

DropLoad.com also enables users to send large files, though they restrict file sizes to 100 MB.

However, DropLoad.com offers one extra feature lacking in YouSendIt: delivery confirmation.

Dropload enables you to know when the person you sent the file to actually clicks the link to download the file.

This cuts down on the "I never got the file" claims and acts like the Post Office making them sign for registered mail.

You can't prove they read it, but you can prove they received it.

DropLoad.com does require you to register for a username and password, but the service is free.

Overall, both services do an excellent job of solving a growing problem for a huge audience worldwide.

Also, if you sell information products customers download from the Internet, the link expiration and confirmation features can come in handy (such as giving out free samples or preview copies to potential joint venture partners).

Hopefully, many of you will find these sites helpful in your business or home needs.

Please leave your comments as to whether this info was useful or not.

A SPECIAL ONE TIME TAX CREDIT ON YOUR 2006 TAX RETURN

This is from CNN Money.com. http://money.CNN.Com/2006/05/25/news/
telephonetax_refund/index.htm

When it comes time to prepare and file your 2006 tax return,
make sure you don't overlook the "federal excise tax refund credit."

You claim the c redit on line 71 of your form 1040.

A similar line will be available if you file the short form 1040A.

If you have family or friends who no longer file a tax return AND they
have their own land phone in their home and have been paying
a phone bill for years, make sure they know about this form 1040EZ-T.

What is this all about?

Well the federal excise tax has been charge to you on your phone bill
for years.

It is an old tax that was assessed on your toll calls based on how far
the call was being made and how much time you talked on that call.

When phone companies began to offer flat fee phone service, challenges
to the excise tax ended up in federal courts in several districts of
the country.

The challenges pointed out that flat fee/rate phone service had nothing
to do with the distance and the length of the phone call.

Therefore, the excise tax should/could not be assessed.

The IRS has now conceded this argument.

Phone companies have been given notice to stop assessing the federal
excise tax as of Aug 30, 2006.

You will most likely see the tax on your September cutoff statement,
but it should NOT be on your October bill.

But the challengers of the old law also demanded restitution.

So the IRS has announced that a one time credit will be available
when you and I file our 2006 tax return as I explained above.

However, the IRS also established limits on how BIG a credit
you can get.

Here's how it works.

If you file your return as a single person with just you as a dependent,
you get to claim a $30 credit on line 71 of your 1040.

If you file with a child or a parent as your dependent, you claim $40.

If you file your return as a married couple with no children ,
you claim $40.

If you file as married with children, you claim $50 if one child,
$60 if two children.

In all cases, the most you get to claim is $60 - UNLESS you have all
your phone bills starting AFTER Feb 28, 2003 through July 31, 2006
(do not use any bills starting Aug 1, 2006.), then you can add up
the ACTUAL TAX AS IT APPEARS ON YOUR BILLS AND CLAIM THAT FOR A CREDIT.

Now if you have your actual phone bills and come up with an
ACTUAL TAX AMOUNT, you cannot use line 71 on your tax return.

You have to complete a special form number 8913 and attach it to your
tax return.

Individuals using the special from 1040EZ-T will have to attach this
form 8913 also.

One final point - this credit is a refundable credit.

That means you get this money, no matter how your tax return works out.

If you would end up owing the IRS a balance, the refund will reduce
that balance you owe.

If you end up getting a refund, the credit will be added and you get
a bigger refund by that $30 to $60, depending on how many dependents
are on your return.

Feel free to pass this on or make copies for family and friends who
don't have computers.

http://www.blackwebportal.com/

As some of you might know, a dynamic young African-American Internet duo,
Rob and Roz Rucker have created a brand new search engine and portal site
called The BlackWebPortal.

The site is designed with African-Americans in mind. Right now their
viewership is the low thousands. They need to cross the hundreds of
thousands barrier to have any real chance of keeping this site online at all.

Some of you are thinking...why does it matter?

It matters because BlackVoices is wholly owned by the Tribune Company;
Black Families by Cox Communications; BlackPlanet.com by an Asian company;
and Soul City HBO by AOL-Times/Warner.

The BlackWebPortal is the only
site that is 100% African-American owned.

The BlackWebPortal needs all of us to start emailing our friends, relatives,
etc., all over the world to start using the resources at the BlackWebPortal.

The important thing is that they need the help getting the word out about this
site.

Let's help this site out by visiting and seeing what they have to offer.
So please tell EVERYONE about the Black Web Portal.

Don't just bookmark it for yourself. Spread the news!

This is a new millennium! We must begin truly supporting black technology
efforts in the same way we cheer on our movie and athletic stars.

If we don't, they'll end up having to do the same as other black web sites by getting assistance from elsewhere, thereby losing the original flavor they have.

PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD! BlackWebPortal

Your Comments Are Needed

Fellow classmates,
Let's start the New Year with new ideas, and content for our blog. Please use the comments link to offer suggestions on what topics you would like to see posted.

Maybe you could write an article on any non inflammatory topic,or provide links to sites with interesting content or helpful information.

Our respective interests will vary, but that does not mean others will not appreciate your input.

By the way,
Have you been prompted by Windows Update to download Internet
Explorer 7 (I.E.7)?

If you did, you may have noticed your computer "acting differently", starting more slowly, or having problems processing your emails.

It is possible I.E 7 is the problem. It depends on your brand
of computer.

The best way to solve the problem is to do a System Restore
back to a time just before you downloaded I.E.7.

To find System Restore, click Start>AllPrograms>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. Follow the directions on the page.

It may be best to wait until Microsoft works out the bugs before before downloading I.E.7.
